Hi Everyone,
Does anyone have a recommendation for scanners for personal use?
Features I would like to have:
Works well with Mayan
Can send to SMB shares
Can select different SMB share folders on the user screen
Can edit the filename on the user screen
Can handle letter size paper, receipts, and random size product manuals
Thanks for any help,
Daniel
Hello,
As we’ve worked on deploying Mayan EDMS for many clients and scan many documents ourselves, one brand has consistently stood out as an ideal combination of features, price, and quality: Brother scanners. In particular, their models have performed well for small to mid-sized deployments with daily scanning volumes of 1,000 pages.
We’ve had a positive experience with the ADS-2800W model. It’s durable and fast, making it suitable for heavy home, home office, and workgroups use. The touchscreen interface allows for easy configuration, and the web-based UI provides an additional layer of convenience. SMB support has worked seamlessly, but we’re unsure about file renaming capabilities.
Notably, this scanner has seen a 2x price increase over time, which could be attributed to its high demand due to its quality.
Our reservations with this model include:
- The web UI can take some time to learn and navigate.
- Certain features, such as SSH and SFTP, have experienced issues due to the use of outdated ciphers in the firmware. This is not unique to Brother scanners.
- The internal WiFi card is not upgradable, which may impact performance specially during batch scanning. To achieve optimal results, we recommend using a wired network connection.
You can find more information about integrating this scanner with TrueNAS and Mayan EDMS on our Knowledge Base article: Integrating the Brother ADS-2800W scanner with TrueNAS and Mayan EDMS

Thank you for that detailed response. I will take a look at the specs and verify the filename renaming aspect.
It looks the ADS-2800W is out of production. The ADS-3300W seems to be the closest equivalent available.
After a lot of research, I ended up with a Brother ADS-1700W for personal use.
A bit of a hassle to set up the web directories to my NAS initially, but I’ve had no complaints since.
Scan directly to a (series of) watch folders names after their document type, and Mayan folder watch handles the rest.

Thanks for the information. That’s exactly how I was planning on setting up mine.
