Offgrid, on the field Mayan solution

Hi all,

I’m in need of an off-grid Mayan solution for work related to the recovery situation in North Carolina. If you’ve watched the news you’ll know I can’t go into details but we need a way to track a lot of documents onsite in places where there is neither internet nor AC power.

I found this post

But it seems to be for a very old version and testing the latest version on similar hardware I found out that it no longer runs smoothly.

Has anyone successfully run Mayan EDMS on an off-grid and/or natural disaster setup?

@roberto.rosario it seems you have the experience running it on solar power after hurricanes, any hints?

Thanks!

Hi,

Research and development of offgrid solutions has continued since that original article.

Fully contained portable power systems are much more accessible now so there is not much advantage in building 12 volt DC systems like the older ones.

The latest iteration is 120V AC and uses as many off-the-shelf parts as possible. Almost nothing is custom built.

It is pretty much just a small computer inside a case with minor networking hardware.

The ideal companion console for this is something like a Toughbook but Thinkpads work as well and offer better price to performance ratio.

For power I use an EcoFlow River and Starlink for internet.

If there is interest I can write a tutorial on building one.

Honestly, I was super stoked about this until I got to the last line. Charging people to learn how to build something that could benefit hundreds or thousands of people during an emergency? That just doesn’t seem right to me. I thought you were all about sharing knowledge and helping others. Please reconsider sharing the tutorial for free.

Already did, and delivered them personally, splitting the costs of the components, the trips, and my time between Mayan EDMS LLC and my own pocket. And this is not the first time.

I don’t publish these things because the end goal of good deeds should be intention, not attention.

I also don’t publish these to protect the people involved and avoid them getting bothered, targeted, or harassed.

This is the only bit I’ll share and that will be end of the topic.

The cases containing the components for the offgrid servers and other supplies.

First aid and severe trauma backpacks.

The last trip, Oct 8, which passed in front of hurricane Milton as it was approaching Florida.

Leaving my family in the middle of storms to do the right thing only to get back exhausted to an inbox full of hate mail and Reddit drama because apparently I did not closed a forum topic fast enough or some other complain while onsite or in flight.

Keep all of this in mind when complaining that some topics are being added to the Knowledge Base for the benefit of those that support Mayan and the ones that make these trips possible.
