Biotech research

Hello, I am a biomedical researcher in need of a document management solution. We have an extensive collection of papers related to a COVID-19 topic that requires processing. Some colleagues recommended Mayan EDMS as a potential option. Before I can make an informed decision about using the software, I would appreciate answers to the following questions:

  1. Are there any specific restrictions or limitations on using the software for documents related to COVID-19?
  2. Will Mayan EDMS redact or censor any sensitive information within the documents?
  3. Does Mayan EDMS collect or share metadata about the research topic, and if so, with whom does it share this information?
  4. Are AI-powered tools available in Mayan EDMS that can assist with document processing?
    • Can Mayan EDMS process large volumes of documents efficiently, within a reasonable timeframe?

Finally, I would greatly appreciate guidance on setting up a system to efficiently manage and process these documents.

Thank you.

  • Are there any specific restrictions or limitations on using the software for documents related to COVID-19?

Mayan EDMS is a free open source project. It is a tool which we provide free of charge with access to the source code and with an open license.

No, there are no limitations in regard to usage regarding COVID documents. What you use it for is up to you. Like any tool, Mayan EDMS is indifferent to what you use it for. The purpose (and consequences if used for ilegal acts) are solely your own.

There are licensing and copyright limitations when using the source code, when you distribute the software, or when creating derivative works based on the code. For more details:

  • Will Mayan EDMS redact or censor any sensitive information within the documents?

No, it will no censor information on its own. But if you wish you can redact information, either manually or automatically using pattern matching via the workflow engine.

  • Does Mayan EDMS collect or share metadata about the research topic, and if so, with whom does it share this information?

No, information is neither gathered nor shared. You can confirm this by auditing the source code:

  • Are AI-powered tools available in Mayan EDMS that can assist with document processing?

AI tools are not included as part of Mayan EDMS. We do include Ollama integration. This allows you to process document images, text, or metadata using any of the Ollama support models. Either the built in models or your fine tuned (using LORA or RAG) models based on the core Ollama models.

  • Can Mayan EDMS process large volumes of documents efficiently, within a reasonable timeframe?

“Large volumes of document” is subjective, but we either have access or perform technical support on installations which process millions of new documents per day.

“within a reasonable timeframe” is also subjective. This will depend on many factors like hardware and workload properties, but Mayan EDMS is highly configurable and can be fine tuned for many workload types.

  • Finally, I would greatly appreciate getting help on setting up a system to efficiently manage and process these documents.
